Mid Level Mountain Bike?
Right now I have a specialized hardrock sport disc mountain bike, and have used it for about 1 year now, and i feel i am ready to step up to the next level and get a better bike. I spent about 500 on this bike, and want have a price range of about 1000-1700 on this next bike. The most expensive, and my favorite bike I have looked at so far in the Cannondale 29er 2. (http://www.rei.com/product/780429?cm_mmc=cse_froogle-_-datafeed-_-product-_-780429&mr:trackingCode=2A763717-26C6-DD11-9B0F-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA) But that may be a little too pricy. Any suggestions on a good second bike?

That is definitely a sweet looking bike! I would not regret getting that as my bike, although my mtn. bike skills are not up to par on that.
My opinion, for you, is to decide what biking goals and discipline you have, and find a bike to fit that. Right now your hardtail covers most of general terrains, and fast firetrails. If there’s a specific trail that you have difficulty going over, find a bike which you think can help you improve. 29er is definitely a good choice, but perhaps you want to do gnarly downhills, then get a downhill bike. At that price range dual-susp. bikes comes into play, so consider that too. Definitely take your time since this is serious investment, and that you are more knowledgeable in riding.

Take a look at this one: http://www. bikesdirect. com/products/motobecane/fly_xc. htm
At $999. 99, no tax no shipping charge. A friend of mine gought a 2007 model and we all think the bike is great. Light, top notch parts, rides well. A great value.
or this one:

At $1199. 99 the Fly Pro has hydraulic disc brakes and is even lighter.
These are high-end bikes at a moderate price point.

it all depands on what type of riding you plan on doing and what type of bike. for ur price range u could get a good full suspension or a great hardtail. i would definitly reccomend cannondale, but i prefer full suspension over 29ers so i would not get the 29er 2. i would howerver look at the rush 6. also u could get a trek

Try the Norco Freeride HT series, or the Specialized P Bikes. Nice bikes. Trek arent bad either. Just take a look at the main brands, I don’t know if you want a hardtail or fs so. . .
Check out Giant, Cannondale, Specialized, Norco Banshee and etc.
Luck
